Week of May 13 - 17

Monday - re-collect corrected tests, taking up the Life of A Farmer in the 1920s handout, farmer posters due, begin working on the handout 'Life in Canada in the 1920s'

Tuesday - continue working on the handout 'Life in Canada in the 1920s'.  Needs to be completed for homework.  Begin a look into the Great Depression.  Watched 12 minutes of 'Canada, A People's History': Episode 13 'Hard Times'.  Began taking note on the Causes of the Great Depression

Wednesday -  continue note on the causes of the Great Depression

Thursday - introduction and beginning of the Causes of the Great Depression descriptive essay.

Monday - Dealing with Post-War challenges, Life for Canadian Women in the 1920s

Week of April 29 - May 3

Monday - WW1 test review sheet given.  Complete Paris 1919 (if necessary).  Use Paris 1919 notes to make 10 predictions about how the Treaty of Versailles might effect the 20th Century.

Tuesday - Treaty of Versailles and the League of Nations

Wednesday - Wilson's 14 points and Canada's involvement in the League of Nations 

Thursday - Unit Test Review

Friday -  World War 1 Unit test

Week of April 22 - 26:  Final good copies now overdue.  Please get them in asap.

Monday - Completion of Passchendaele movie.  Took up handout questions.  Short note on Discrimination during WWI

Tuesday - Textbook questions:  pg 44-45 Discrimination during WW1 handout questions.  Take up questions.  Look at the Castle Mountain Internment Camp.

Wednesday - Reaching the end of WW1 (textbook pg 24-25 and handout questions).  Take up questions.  Introduction of Paris 1919.  Begin watching Paris 1919.

Thursday - Dinning Memorial Rugby Tournament.  Current events.  Discussion about the Halifax Explosion.  Last 20 minutes we watched rugby.

Friday - continue watching Paris 1919.

Week of April 15 - 19

Monday - review of Conscription Crisis and the election of 1917.  Beginning of Passchendaele movie and questions.

Tuesday - working on good copies of news article/editorial/editorial cartoon/image, etc - computer lab

Wednesday - same as Tuesday (build into 8 x 11 sheets to put into newspaper)

Thursday - final productions of newspapers, continue with Passchendale

Friday - PA Day (enjoy the day and get ready for WW1 test next week using the newspapers we've created)

Week of April 8 - 12:

Monday - working on rough drafts of editorial, editorial cartoon, news article, photo/image & comment.

Tuesday - same

Wednesday - Rough copies due for all 4 required elements (listed above).  Reading: Conscription in Canada, and the Election of 1917.  After reading, form an opinion and build the skeleton form of an opinion essay.  (good practice for the OSSLT!)

Thursday - OSSLT (no class)

Friday - 

 Week of April 2-5:

Tuesday - Profiteering during WW1 (reading pg60-61 of 'Making History' text and filling out the handout).  Introduction to Editorials. Editorial samples and practice.

Wednesday - (no assembly today).  All research and sources for culminating assignment due today as per assignment outline.  Build editorials for culminating assignment practice.  

Thursday - creating an editorial cartoon and a newspaper article

Week of Feb 18-22.  (Mon Feb 18 Family Day) (Tues Feb 19, Wed Feb 20 both SNOW DAYS)

Thurs Feb 21 - students completed and class took up 'Settling Canada's West' - answers provided on this site

                         - students began working through 'Life in the Cities'.  Instructions:  1.  Use the table of wages on the 2nd page (zoom in) to calculate weekly wages on the 'Life in Cities blank' pdf.  Answer the questions through this.  For question #3, subtract the goods on the food and fuel list ("Typical Weekly Expenditures...") that you will do without, until you reach below the weekly wage of common labourer in Hamilton.  The last question (#4) can be left blank.

Fri Feb 22 - Students working to complete handout "Three Major Issues in the Laurier Era".  Use 'Making History' text pg 46-52 (included).

 Week of March 4 - 8:  Monday - complete the blank map of Europe in 1914 so you have it for your notes.  After this is completed, also copy the Africa in 1914 map onto the blank map.  Only label the countries on the Africa map that are requested.  Don't forget your map titles and labels.  Please be neat and accurate with your labels.  Tuesday - Quiz (30 minutes) which involves all we have done so far; this includes history from 1900-1914 as well as information on types of governments and economies.  Maps of Europe and Africa are included.  Tuesday - also completed the note 'Eur Afr Observations'.  Wednesday - Video: 'Causes of World War 1'.  History from 1900-1914 test on Thursday (will include everything done to date, up to the Europe and Africa 1914 maps, including observations about the maps).  Friday - seminar in library with Mrs. Gilchrist about proper online and print sourcing.  Brief introduction of our major WW1 assignment.  Chatterbox groups browse newspapers to identify ways that information is offered (ie. editorial, news articles, comics, etc.), and consider which of these they would be interesting in creating for their group assignment.  Brief time to browse the internet for interesting WW1 facts.

Week of March 11-15  - MARCH BREAK :)

Week of March 18 - 22:  Monday - Discussed found facts on WW1.  Took up the video handout for 'Causes of WW1'.  Went through the options that the different groups will choose from for their WW1 newspaper assignment.  Groups chose their top 3 favourite choices.  Tuesday - Groups choose final group topics and divide up the topics.  Practice identifying key words and brainstorming key words.  Use brainstorming to build guiding research questions.  Wednesday - Groups brainstorm topics on chart paper.  Thursday - Groups use topic brainstorming to develop 3 guiding questions for each topic; to be handed in for review and feedback.  Friday - groups begin research based on guiding questions

Week of March 25 - 28:  Monday - Research period.  Tuesday - review newspaper assignment formal outline.
